Are you a 501C3?

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices."

For government grants, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes

There are also a number of corporations that give grants to nonprofits. Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/citizenship/giving/
provides support to Community-Based Technology and Learning Center (CTLC) organizations including Nonprofit—in the United States, 501(c)(3) designation—or a nongovernmental organization; Government funded and operated—a nonprofit organization that receives government funding or is a partner with a governmental; and schools.
References :
Grants aren't hard to FIND, but they can be extremely difficult and time-consuming to GET.

There are essentially only 5 sources for grants. A little known fact it that you do NOT have to be a non-profit to get a grant, regardless of what others tell you ... I've helped for-profits apply for grants.

Most of the Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at:
http://www.sbirworld.com
There is also info on this site about how to apply.

Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with your City Hall for details.

There are some Federal government grants for minority businesses. You can find info at:
http://www.mbda.gov

And, there are some minority organizations that provide grants ... La Raza and the NAACP sometimes do.
http://www.nclr.org
http://www.naacp.org

Private companies sometimes help fund start-ups, especially if they think they will see some benefit from it. These are very difficult to find, but can sometimes be the easiest to get.

Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at http://www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.
References :
I'm a grant writer.

Have you received your 501C3 designation from the IRS?

http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=96099,00.html

Getting a 501C3 designation is the first step before you even think about getting grants. No foundation will give you a grant without a 501C3. Ask your accountant to help you prepare everything to get this. Be prepared though because of the paperwork and time you need for this process

I suggest you go to Foundation Center http://foundationcenter.org/ -- they have the most complete list of grant giving foundations/organizations (though theirs is a subscription based website -- but it is so worth it). They also have all the information you need on how to operate your non profit and continue to finance

When getting grants, be prepared though. The reporting process can be really cumbersome, depending on the funding organization. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time doing the reports. They may not ask you to repay the grant -- but they often want to see counterpart funding from you.
References :
If you are going to be depending on grants, you should either get yourself up to speed or hire a grantwriter. You may find someone willing to volunteer to do one, but to be successful, you really want someone who can't do so on a regular basis, and who can grow their knowledge of your organizaiton through an extended relationship.

Good luck with your idea, and I hope you get it going.

You will probably find more assistance if you show that your group are already thinking of ideas for fund-raising.

The prepare a proposal of what would happen during the week - DON'T cram too much into each day, but give thought to offering different therapies, activities, talks or visits.

If you go to www.after-cancer.com and fish around, you might find ideas under contacts, or events, or news.

Good luck
