I just started grant writing about 4 mo. ago & am trying to put together a portfolio. I know I need to include samples of my work, but what kind of samples (do I include a fictitious proposal, an article, or what), and how many? Thanks!

I would not recommend a ficticious proposal, as there are too many variables you would need to include. Any writing samples you have that highlights analytical ability would be good, as would detailed articles. You could do a sample "letter of intent" rather than a whole proposal if you want to include something specific.
As you are so new to the field, I suggest you review the resources at the Foundation Center for grantwriting. They have some free online tutorials, links to written samples, and more.
