I have been writing grant proposals on and off for the past 4 years, and have now started getting more leads to people wanting my services for specific project funding.
What advice would you have for someone who wants to start a consulting company? Should I form an LLC? I know the ropes of how to approach prospective clients for compensation (i.e., not to ask for a percentage of a successful grant, but to charge a flat rate) but how have other grant writers and/or non-profit professionals started their businesses?
The structure of the business should be based on what’s most convenient, cost effective and tax smart.
An LLC’s main advantage is the limited liability. But you’d have public liability insurance to cover most of that anyway. However, if you’re looking to run a non-profit operation then different rules apply. Talk to a good local accountant.
